#362. THE POLITICAL AGENDA- A Flash Fiction

A week from then was the election day and the party house was booming with activities. Exit poll results that came that evening weren’t favouring them and the spirit of the party workers were all time low.

Meghan who was representing the party was seen losing her sleep over it. Her husband Harry wanted to take her for a long drive, to cheer her up. She relented, after much persuasion.

At the end of the day, Harry was finally able to bring her cheery self back. Meghan broke into peals of laughter at a silly joke of Harry. Just then, they were intercepted by a jeep, out of which four masked men came out. Holding Harry at gunpoint, they shot Meghan at point-blank range and drove off. She was taken to hospital, yet couldn’t be revived.

The men responsible for Meghan’s murder were couldn’t be traced. Harry was visibly devastated, to say the least. People were sure that it was the doing of the opposition and the news garnered much attention from all quarters. The party leaders were after the reluctant Harry to contest elections in place of Meghan. He did after the persistent request from all party workers alike.

The whole scenario shifted, as he garnered votes based on sympathy, as the entire voter base empathized with his agony. Harry had the biggest landslide victory. He promised the public that he would take the legacy of Meghan forward and vowed to catch the murderers.

On the day of oath, Harry offered his respect to the garlanded photo of Meghan along with the party workers. He looked at her photo lovingly and thought, “I love you Meghan, but unfortunately I love this position more. I owe this victory to you, as without you the tides wouldn’t have turned in my favour. I am so sorry that this victory had to come at the cost of your life. But, it was the right thing to do at that point of time.”

He then got ready to take his oath.

  1. Quite a twist! I learned a new word just Saturday that fits Harry, “empleomania.” It’s an obsession with holding public office, no matter the cost!
